A candidate for mayor who was set to run against his cousin in Victorias City, Negros Occidental, has withdrawn his Certificate of Candidacy, while a mayoral bet in Cadiz City has repudiated his nomination by the Nationalist People's Coalition and has opted to run as an independent.
The affidavit of withdrawal filed by Mark Ledesma Palanca, son of Mayor Severo Palanca, as independent mayoral candidate for Victorias has been submitted to the COMELEC Law Department in Manila, Elections Provincial Supervisor Jessie Suarez said yesterday.
Victorias Vice Mayor Francis Frederick Palanca, who is running for mayor of Victorias under the Liberal Party, said he respects the decision of his first cousin to withdraw from the race.
The withdrawal of his cousin leaves the vice mayor with only two other opponents for mayor in 2013 – Teresita Sta. Ana Bartolome and Felix Campos Montilla III who are running as independents.
Meanwhile, Simeon Bacolado Jr., who initially stated in his COC that he was running for mayor of Cadiz City under the NPC, has also filed an affidavit of repudiation of party nomination and acceptance before the COMELEC Law Department, Suarez said.
Bacolado, in his affidavit, said he is opting to run as an independent.
His opponents for mayor of Cadiz are incumbent Patrick Escalante who is running under the LP-United Negros Alliance ticket, and Manuel Garganera III who is an independent bet.
Nazario Ibañez also submitted an affidavit to the COMELEC Law Department withdrawing his candidacy for Cadiz City councilor, citing health problems.
Changes among candidates can still occur as those belonging to political parties can still be replaced until December 21, Suarez said.
Suarez said he is preparing a list of nuisance bets for submission to the COMELEC head office in Manila for possible purging from the list of 2013 candidates in Negros Occidental.*CPG
