PNP NegOr reports
reduction in crime incidents

The Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office reported a decrease in the number of crime incidents in the third quarter of 2012 compared to the same period last year, a government press release said.

In the recent Provincial Peace and Order Council meeting, NOPPO director, Senior Supt. Edward Carranza, said that 684 crimes, or a decrease of 108 incidents were recorded from July to September, lower than the 792 incidents noted in the same period last year.

He attributed the reduction to the intensified police visibility and relentless campaign against all forms of illegal activities province-wide, the press release also said.

The PNP accomplishment report also shows that 391 index and 293 non-index crimes were recorded in the last quarter, compared to 531 index and 261 non-index cases in the same period in 2011.

Index crimes are those committed against persons while non-index incidents are violations of special laws, like illegal logging, gambling or drugs, and local laws or ordinances, the press release said.

Theft had the highest incidence with 137 cases, physical injuries – 88, robbery – 62, murder – 44, carnapping – 34 cases, homicide – 12, rape – 11, and cattle rusting with three cases, the police also said.

On the campaign against loose firearms, the NOPPO confiscated 116 illegal guns and arrested 44 persons in 116 operations; and seized 111.57 grams of suspected shabu and 6.92 dried marijuana leaves, all worth P1,317,084, and nabbed 51 persons in 39 operations conducted in the province.

The police also arrested 105 illegal gambling suspects, filed 43 cases in court, and seized P140,084 in bet money in 96 operations, the press release also said.

It reported a crime solution rate of 35.23 percent against the 31.81 percent accomplishment last year, and a crime clearance efficiency, or the percentage of cleared cases out of the total number of crime incidents, of 32.6 percent, from the 33.08 percent level in 2011, the press release added.*
