Guv: Negros will
win Palaro bid

Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said he is sure Negros Occidental will win its bid to host the Palarong Pambansa in April next year.

He said Negros Occidental and Dumaguete City will make their final bid presentations at the Department of Education in Manila before Secretary Armin Luistro this afternoon.

The hosting of the Palaro will boost the economy of Negros Occidental as it will bring about 20,000 visitors to the province, he said.

The athletes and officials alone will be about 15,000 plus relatives and friends who will accompany them, the governor said.

The governor had said earlier that, should the Negros Occidental win its bid, some of the games in the 2013 Palarong Pambansa, will be held at the newly renovated Paglaum Sports Complex.

He said the first class facilities at the Panaad Stadium and the Paglaum Sports Complex will add to the attraction of the province as next year's host of the school-based national games.

On the complaint of Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez Jr. about the delayed release of scholarship funds for the first semester, Marañon said it will be released but it should not be used for politics.

“The funds for scholarships are not owned by politicians, they come from the pockets of Juan de la Cruz,” he said.

“We are just the stewards of the people's money,” he said of government officials, including himself.*CPG
