USLS student
MassKara Queen
BY ADRIAN NEMES III

Who will be the next MassKara Queen ?

That question was finally answered last night when University of St. La Salle Biology student Ena Louis Velasco was crowned MassKara Queen 2012 at the jam-packed USLS coliseum in Bacolod City.
Velasco, 20, who also won the best in festival costume and best in evening wear awards, bested nine other contestants and won P80,000 in cash.

Masskara Queen 2011 Alexis Danica Drilon, also a Biology student of USLS, and Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia crowned the new Queen.

Candidate number 3 Samyah Al-Dossary, 17, an AB Interdisciplinary studies student of USLS, who did not win any special or corporate awards was first runner-up. She received P50,000 in cash, while candidate number 2,  Daphne Tanya Molinaar, 17 and who bagged the best in ramp and best in swimwear awards was second runner-up taking home  P30,000 in cash.

During the final interview, the three finalists were asked what image or picture would they choose to best describe how good life in Bacolod is.

Velasco got the judges' nod when she chose a picture of a smile saying that it depicts the happiness of Bacoleños, who despite the hardships they face are still showing a positive outlook in life.

Al-Dossary, chose the picture of a mask because it depicts how Bacoleños manage to stand up amidst the problems they are facing everyday.

Molinaar, the youngest contestant this year and who also represented the city in the Miss World-Philippines 2012 pageant in Manila, said that she also chooses the picture of a mask to best describe how good life in Bacolod is, not because the city is known for the MassKara festival but because it is something that inspires Bacoleños.

Candidate number 8 Kris Ann Marie Dumancas, 20, nursing graduate of USLS was adjuged as Miss Congeniality and best in make-up, Candidate number 6 Kris Piamor Gicaro, 23, a nursing student of Riverside College was Miss Photogenic, while candidate number 10 Dominique Abayon, a Physical Therapy student, also of RC, was best in Talent.

Judging the 3-hour pageant produced by ABS-CBN Bacolod were Iloilo Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, Police Regional Office 6 Director Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz, Binibining Pilipinas 2012 semi-finalist and Miss Earth Philippines Fire 2009 Patricia Tumulak, former beauty queen Maggie Limjap, Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications of Megaworld Corporation Harold Geronimo, Miss Iloilo Dinagyang chairman Alex Gonzales Soncio, Visayan DAILY STAR lifestyle columnist Ivy Visitacion, and Lin-ay sg Negros Director Rene Hinojales.*APN
