4TH GAEV chessfest
unfolds October 27

The 4th George S. Aguirre/Atty. Eugenio Villasor Villanueva Jr. Memorial Negros Rapid Chess Championship will open on Oct. 27 at the Centroplex Mall, Bacolod City, a press release from the organizers said.

Antonio Ivan Aguirre and the FCBI First Community Bank Incorporated, Hugo Villanueva are the major sponsors of the tournament while the Eugenio Villasor Villanueva Foundation serves as a co-sponsor.

Both the Aguirre  and Villanueva  families in Negros Occidental are supportive of the grassroots development of chess in the province, the presss release said.

Hugo Villanueva,  a  US resident, will arrive in Bacolod City to personally award the prizes to the winner.

Also backing up the program is Tony Aguirre, who stressed that to develop Negros chess at a higher level, it should be free from politics and he professionally managed with a vision to provide opportunity for local players to play in the global arena and earn GM titles.

Both Villanueva and Aguirre were instrumental in the participation of Fide Master Sander Severino and PO1 Ernie Abanco in a summer chess tournament this year in Bangkok, Thailand.

Continuing their support to the local chess community, the two patrons of the sport plan to hold the 2nd edition of Negros Closed Championship in December, with the tournament winner getting the chance to compete in another international competition next year, the press release said.*
