The Department of Education will announce next week the winning bidder who will host the 2013 Palarong Pambansa, Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. said yesterday.
Marañon led the delegation that presented the bid of Negros Occidental before DepEd officials in Manila yesterday afternoon.
A delegation from Dumaguete City also presented their bid.
Among those in Marañon’s delegation were Bacolod Councilor Carl Lopez representing Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Negros Occidental Schools Superintendent Juliet Jeruta, and Bacolod Schools Superintendent Gemma Ledesma.
The hosting of the Palaro will boost the economy of Negros Occidental as it will bring about 20,000 visitors to the province, the governor said.
The athletes and officials alone will be about 15,000 plus relatives and friends who will accompany them, he added.
Marañon and DepEd Regional Director Mildred Garay have expressed optimism that Negros Occidental will win the bidding.
The governor cited the existing sports facilities in the province, spread over the cities of Silay, Talisay, Bacolod, and Bago, that can efficiently host the different sporting events. The mayors of these cities have also pledged their support for the bid of the province to host the 2013 Palarong Pambansa.
Should Negros Occidental win the bid, it will be the fifth time it will the host the national competition among high school and elementary students in the country. The province hosted the games in 1974, 1978, 1998, and in 2000.*CPG
