17th UniGames kicks off today

The Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball team and the University of St. La Salle women’s volleyball squad start their bid for a back-to-back title as the 17th Sandugo-University Games kicks off today at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City.

The Blue Eagles, with Kieffer Ravena in the lineup, will be facing the University of San Jose Recoletos (Cebu) in the noon game at the USLS Coliseum, while the Lady Stingers will play against De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, 10 a.m. at the USLS Covered Court.

The AdMU-USJR game will follow after the 10:30 a.m. match-up between the USLS Stingers and the Atedeo de Davao University, while the University of the East Warriors and the University of Northern Philippines will open this year’s men’s basketball competition at 7:30 a.m., followed by the tussle between University of San Agustin (Iloilo) and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines at 9 a.m.

Tribute set for `Bro. Rolly’

The organizers of the Philippine University Games will honor the late Bro. Rolando Dizon, founder of the annual multi-event collegiate competition, during the opening ceremony tonight, 6:30 p.m. at the USLS Coliseum.

UniGames president Roger Banzuela said they will also launch at the opening rites the Bro. Roland Dizon Memorial UniGames Foundation, that will spearhead a year-round training program for the development of coaches and athletes.

He said they plan to hold sports clinics, coaches training, sports psychology and sports medicine seminars and other programs with the provincial coaches as the main focus.

PBA IN VICTORIAS
Rain or Shine vs. Talk ‘n Text

Aside from the PBA superstars from both teams, Rain or Shine and Talk ‘n Text, basketball followers are also keen to see Norman Black, the new head coach of TNT as he leads the team in an out-of-town PBA Philippine Cup game in Victorias City this Saturday.

After winning his fifth straight championship in the UAAP with the Ateneo Blue Eagles, Black is back as head coach of Talk ‘n Text. The team presently carries a 4-0 win-loss card and aims to tighten its grip on the leadership in the team standings.

The Texters, however, will be up for a tough game against Rain or Shine, who remains lethal after capturing the 2012 PBA Governor’s Cup a couple of months back.
