Mayor Evelio Leonardia and Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson will inaugurate Thursday the P1.5 million consumer welfare desk and other reconstructed facilities at the Bacolod Central Market with directors Dominic Abad of the Department of Trade and Industry and Evelyn Trompeta of the Department of Interior and Local Government.
Ernie Pineda, Bacolod City Market Coordinating and Monitoring Task Force head, yesterday said repairs and installation of CWD at the North Burgos and Libertad markets in Bacolod that have a total budget of P3.5 million and P7 million, respectively, have already started.
He said the CWD is important because consumers will be able to report and lodge their complaints there. It will also regulate and prevent fraud in the markets, Pineda added.
Meanwhile, as part of the celebration of the Consumer Welfare Month, the city has conducted awareness training in consumer rights in 61 barangays and selected high schools.
He said consumers at the barangay level are often victimized so they have to be reminded of their rights.
Consumer education is also needed to make students aware of their rights to affordable basic necessities, he added. *LTG
