Winners of MassKara dance,
song contests named

The winners of the MassKara Festival dance and song competitions were announced by organizers in a press release yesterday.

The New Oldz Crew bested nine other finalists in the grand finals of the GMA DanssKara: The MassKara Dance Showdown held at the BAYS Center in Bacolod City yesterday. It won P15,000 and a MassKara trophy.

First runner-up was the War Crew with P10,000 cash prize and a MassKara trophy; True Friends was second runner-up and won P7,000 cash prize and a trophy; while New Born Crew, Off Beat, Delta Heat Waves, After Class Crew, Bacolod Freestylerz, Real Gallians, and YC Lakas Pinas received P3,000 in cash each as finalists, the press release also said.

The DanssKara grand finals was supposed to be held Monday night at the closing rites of the MassKara at the Bacolod public plaza, but organizers had to move the competition to yesterday because of heavy rains then.

The winners of the Tandâ! Sing Na, Dance Pa! MassKara Inter-Barangay Talent Competition grand finals, held at the plaza Monday night, were also announced yesterday.

For vocal solo, the winners were Mary Kashmere Solano of Brgy. Villamonte, champion; Reysa Jean Escañan of Brgy. Taculing, first runner-up; and Mary Rose Vagelidad of Brgy. Tangub, second runner-up.

Glas Rosquillo of Brgy. Sum-ag, meanwhile, won the solo dance contest, with Nestor Guancia of Brgy. 16, and Kenneth dela Cruz (Mariposa) of Brgy. Bata, as first and second runners-up, respectively, the press release said.

The winners for both vocal solo and solo dance received P5,000 for the champion, P3,000—first runner-up, and P2,000—second runner-up, the press release added.*

‘Hackathon’ at USLS today

A competition designed to promote awareness of mobile applications development and “technopreneurship” will be held today at the Santuario De La Salle of the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City.

The “hackathon” competition is organized by Smart Corporation Inc’s Developer Network.

Thea Aragon of Smart’s Public Affairs Group said that in the spirit of the just-concluded MassKara Festival, the competition aims to develop and identify applications that will promote Bacolod as a tourist destination through Smart technology platforms.

At least 20 teams composed of two to four members will participate in the competition.

A team of technology experts, led by Earl Valencia, president of IdeaSpace, will discuss with participants the mechanics and details of the competition. With them are Paul Pajo, Ronald Ramos and Bobby Rebultan of the sponsoring corporation.

IdeaSpace is a program that aims to help budding technology entrepreneurs develop groundbreaking solutions and transform these into successful commercial products.

Valencia earned his technology-related degrees from American universities, including Boston University, where he graduated summa cum laude in its electrical engineering program; Cornell University and Stanford, where he studied MBA with certificates in global and public management.*

Kiddie costume party
set Friday in Bacolod

A one-of-a-kind children’s costume party loaded with fun and treats will be held on October 26 at L’Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City, a press release from promoters said.

The 2012 Kiddie Halloween Costume Ball is for the whole family to enjoy, with prizes to be given to children with the best superhero, fantasy, unique, creative and scariest costume, the press release also said.

Other activities and treats are magic, bubble, puppet, and clown shows, balloon twist, fairies and princesses, photo booth, party jump castle and racers, pick-a-prize game booth, games and prizes, piñatas, treasure hunt, kids mob dance, chocolate fountain, popcorn, ice cream, fries, nachos, and more.
