Cajeras tops 4th GAEV
Rapid Chess tournament

Jerich Cajeras, team captain of the College of St. Benilde chess team, led the winners in the 4th GAEV Memorial Negros Rapid Chess Championship held October 27 at the Centroplex Mall in Bacolod City.

Cajeras, who was in Bacolod City last week to see action for St. Benilde in the 17th Sandugo - University Games, posted a total of 6.5 points after seven rounds to win the crown in the local tournament.

In the UniGames, the 18-year-old chess wizard also won the gold in Board 3, and helped the DLS-CSB squad in capturing the championship in the competition. He also used to play for the West Negros University chess team.

For topping the GAEV contest, he received a Prestige Glass trophy, a gold medal, and P 3,000 cash prize from the organizers.

Placing behind Cajeras during the tournament was FIDE Master Sander Severino of Silay City Chess Club, while Vito Tapulgo placed third, Xavier Verdun at fourth place, and National Master Rodrigo Atotubo, fifth place. Tapulso also won the 8-man knock-out Armageddon Blitz side event of the tournament and received the $50 cash prize.

Meanwhile,  Mary Grace Tambasen topped the female division of the GAEV tournament while Joshua Panes was the No. 1 player in the kiddie category.

Prizes during the awarding ceremony was turned over by tournament sponsor Hugo Villanueva and Leah Aguirre, wife of co-sponsor Antonio Ivan Aguirre, Mary Jo Aguirre and Lawrence Villanueva, president of the the First Community Bank, Inc.
