The second edition of the Negros Rapid Chess Championship is set to unfold at the Foodcourt Area of the Centroplex Mall in Bacolod City, 9 a.m. September 23, a press release from the tournament organizers said.

Sponsored by AIA/Tony Ivan Aguirre and the First Community Bank, Inc., Hugo Villanueva, and the Eugenio Villasor Villanueva Foundation as co-sponsor, the one day competition is open to all chess players in Negros Occidental and the neighboring areas.

To effectively manage the tournament, a maximum of 100 participants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis, the press release said.

The champion will receive P3,000 cash prize and a glass trophy, while the first runner-up will get P2,000; second runner-up P1,000.

Third, fourth, and fifth runner-ups will also receive cash incentives, whilt the 6 th to 10 th placers will be awarded with medals. Top female and kiddy participants will also receive cash prizes and gold medals, the press release said.

The tournament serves as a venue to tap new chess talents from the province who will eventually represent the country in international competitions.

Expected to join the competition is last year's champion Xavier Verdun.

The tournament will adopt a 7-round Swiss System format with each player given 25 minutes to finish. Each player is required to bring his or her own chess set and chess clock if available.
