Interschool drum and bugle
competition winners named

A Eucharistic celebration and a motorcade in the major streets of Bacolod kicked off yesterday for the University Week celebration of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, a press release from the school said.

An interschool drum and bugle competition followed at the amphitheatre, that was won by the Francisco Infante National High School, that was also adjudged as the “Most Disciplined Group”. The Tabao NHS and the Luisa Medel NHS were declared first and second runners-up, respectively, while the “Best Mother Majorette” came from Bata NHS, the press release also said.

UNO-R president Fr. Emeterio Buñao opened the celebration that will run until September 10, on the theme “UNO-R:Ayer, Hoy, Siempre.”

Meanwhile, a musical–dance play titled “Tubo” will be presented today at the school gym, with the matinee set at 3 p.m. and the gala at 7 p.m., the press release also said.

The show, written by Fr. Louie Gabinete, chair of the U-Week Executive Committee, is directed and choreographed by Ruel Calansingin, the school’s Kasadyahan Dance Company artistic director, the press release added.*

LCC Bacolod alumni donate
cash for repair of auditorium

La Consolacion College Bacolod high school classes 1987 and 1962, the major sponsors of the 63rd alumni homecoming, recently donated cash to the school’s Centennial Jubilee Fund that will be used to renovate the auditorium, its press release said.

Sister Maria Myrna S. T. Concepcion thanked the alumni for their contribution and for attending the September 2 homecoming. She said the donation is the alumni’s legacy for future generations of LCCians, the press release also said.

The auditorium has been a training ground for speech and drama which had been a forte of the institution especially in the 60s and 70s. It had turned out leaders, successful professionals and award-winning actors, like Odette Khan, who graduated from LCC Bacolod in 1962.

LCC-B is the first Catholic educational institution in Negros Occidental. Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra, in his homily at the mass held in honor of Our Lady of Consolation, recognized the school as the stalwart of Catholic education in the province, the press release added.*

3 daycare centers
inaugurated

Three daycare centers worth P2.6 million, located in Brgy. Ma-ao, Bago City, Negros Occidental, were blessed by Msgr. Loreto Tomo yesterday during inauguration rites with Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., Mayor Ramon Torres and other city and barangay officials present, a press release from the city said.

The constructions of Concordia, Ma-ao Proper I, and Ma-ao Proper II daycare centers, with two comfort rooms and lavatories, were jointly sponsored by the provincial and city governments, the Barangay Council of Ma-ao, and the Bago Social Welfare and Development Office.

In his speech, Marañon said children are the greatest wealth of the country and should be given the right education at a young age. He added that the provincial government will sponsor a dairy feeding program in the daycare centers for the physical and mental development of the kids, the press release also said.

Marañon and Torres turned over the centers to Ma-ao Brgy. Capt. Araceli Pellejo and daycare worker Anie Castaño, in the presence of Bago City Vice Mayor Nicholas Yulo, City Social Welfare and Development officer Ma. Elena Millevo, other barangays captains and kagawads, the press release added.*

MusiKara grand
finals set Friday

The grand finals of the MusiKara: The Search for the 2012 MassKara Festival Music is set 4 p.m. Friday at the Robinsons Place fountain area in Bacolod, a press release from organizers said.

The top 10 finalists that will perform live are Remedyo Heneral (Syudad sang Yuhum), The NRV Band (Mas Masadya…Mas Nami Diri sa Bacolod), Templar’s Band (Yuhum), Berne Street (Life is Good in Bacolod), Jose Johann Manoso and his group (MassKara sang Bacolod), AJJA Band (MassKara 2012), Grupo ni Utod Band (Sinadya sa MassKara), 3 Face (MassKari), SYK Unit (Kari sa MassKara), and Saring Kulay Band (Handumanan sang Gugma), the press release also said.

They were recently screened by a committee composed of Dr. Nenita Cordova, supervisor of the Department of Education—Bacolod Schools Division, who is incharge of the streetdance school category; Rudy Reveche, streetdance committee chairman and creative consultant of the MassKara Festival; Gerry Grey, streetdance music consultant and composer of the MassKara Festival music from 2004 to 2009; Segundo Jesus Cabalcar, choreographer and perennial winner in the MassKara streetdance competition; and William Bangcaya, choreographer of Brgy. Banago, the 2011 streetdance grand champion.

The songs were selected according to music, lyrics, originality and appeal, danceability potential, and recall factor, the press release also said.

Festival director Eli Tajanlangit said the grand prize winner will receive P20,000 in cash, and the winning song will become the official MassKara Dance Parade Music for 2012, while the nine finalists will get P3,000 each.

The songwriting competition is a partnership of the Silver MassKara Festival Organization, organizer of the festival since 2004, ABS-CBN Bacolod and MOR 101.5, the press release added.*
