tilt starts tomorrow

Young tennis players in Negros Occidental and neighboring areas are expected to see action when the Bacolod leg of the 2012 Philta-Palawan Pawnshop Regional Age-Group Championships opens tomorrow at the Center Court Tennis Club in Bacolod City.

The tournament in Bacolod is part of the six-stage circuit of the Philippine Tennis Association’s nationwide talent search.

Philta regional vice president Bong Arguelles said the competition at the Center Court will run until September 10, while the La Carlota Tennis Association will host the tournament on September 14 to 17.

Earlier, Philta regional official Dr. Andres Bayona cited Philta for holding the age-group contest in Iloilo, stressing that the project is a good venue for young tennis players to hone their skills.

“This is a quality tournament for our young players and we are thankful to the sponsor for holding the competition in Iloilo,” Bayona said.

Topping the event in Iloilo were Matthew Crisostomo in the boys’ division and Danielle Aligaen in the girls’ category.

The 14-year-old Crisostomo from Iloilo Central Commercial High School beat Fernando Arguelles twice, 4-2, 5-3, and 4-2, 4-2, to claim the 14- and 16-Under titles then outplayed Ryan Madrelino, 5-3, 2-4, 10-3, to add the 18-U crown to his collection.

Aligaen, who also played under the banner of the La Paz Tennis Club, turned back Mary Grace Zapanta, 5-3, 2-4, 10-3, to claim the title in the girls’ 14-U girls finals then prevailed over Jean Sunio twice, 4-0, 1-4, 10-7, and 4-2, 2-4, 10-3, to likewise reign in the 16- and 18-U category.
