4th grader 1st runner-up
in young chef competition

A 10-year-old grade 4 student of the St. Scholastica’s Academy in Bacolod City, was first runner-up in the Bacolod Young Master Chef Competition held recently at SM Bacolod, a press release said.

The young chef Dianne Alexa Chua is the daughter of Shangri-la Tupas-Chua, herself a chef and cooking instructor, who started teaching her daughter at a young age. Dianne said she hopes to be a professional chef and follow in her mother's footsteps, the press release added.*

Campus journalism
workshop held

About 150 school paper writers, editors and advisers attended the Bacolod leg of the campus journalism seminar-workshop conducted by the Philippine Information Agency at the Grand Regal Hotel in Bacolod City recently, its press release said.

Taken up were oriented on development-oriented journalism, basic writing, reporting and editorial management skills, and the principles of convergence and online journalism in packaging news and information.

Senior staff writer Hector Bryant Macale of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility said that as campus journalists, the participants should observe the pillars of good journalism, like the need to be thorough, accurate, fair, transparent and independent, whether using the old or the new media, the press release said.

Rose Versoza from Cebu, who discussed the law and ethics of online journalism, advised the participants not to plagiarize, in the light of plagiarism issues involving government officials.

The seminar-workshops, on the theme “Convergence Journalism”, had also been conducted in Iloilo City, the press release added.*

Teen actor guest at Talisay fest

ABS-CBN teen actor Daniel Padilla will perform with the Parking Five Band, 9 p.m. tomorrow, during the free “Barangay Kapamilya Night” at the public plaza of Talisay City in Negros Occidental, a press release from the station said.

The activity is in line with the city’s 13th Minuluan Festival, the press release also said.*

Digitizing archival materials
workshop slated Sept. 27-28

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts will hold a seminar-workshop on organizing and digitizing library archival materials on September 27 to 28 at the Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, a press release from organizers said.

The activity will focus on the development of a method in preserving and organizing valuable and irreplaceable materials, and those considered as archival library documents. It will have lectures, hand-on activity, workshop and actual demonstration on digitizing archival materials.

Speakers are Fe Angela Verzosa, archivist of the DLSU Library and the Jose P. Laurel Archive, who will talk on “Archival Cataloging and the General International Standard Archival Description”; and Ateneo de Manila University Rizal Library director Lourdes David, on “Library Archival Digitization: Task, Tools, Technology”; National Library Information Technology Division head Edgardo Quiros, will demonstrate how to digitize from scratch and will discuss the latest trend in cataloging called Resource Description and Access, the press release also said.

A fee of P2,500 will be required from each participant. The seminar will be conducted in partnership with CSA-Bacolod, the National Commission on Library and Information Service, and the Philippine Librarians Association Inc. Western Visayas Regional Librarians Council.

Research journal launched

The Development Education Journal of Multidisciplinary Research, that publishes peer-reviewed papers and adopts a double-blind review process, was launched by the La Consolacion College Bacolod, its press release said.

LCC president Sister Maria Myrna Concepcion said it is imperative for academic institutions to do research in the pursuit of knowledge and truth. She added that the journal provides a platform for greater dissemination of new-found knowledge and discoveries, opportunities for the faculty to be further honed in academic writing, facilitates the application of research findings, and promotes devotion to the scientific process, the press release also said.

Dr. Angel Alcala of the Commission on Higher Education-Silliman University Zonal Research Center, the keynote speaker during the launching, commended the school for taking steps further towards the development of research.

He also received the Tolle Lege Award from the school in recognition of his influence in the development of the research potentials of scientists and educators in the country, the press release said.

The signing of the memorandum of agreement between LCC-Bacolod and the Philippine e-Journals for the online publication of the researches included in the journal highlighted the launching program that was attended by CHEd Region 6 director Virginia Resurreccion.

Articles and papers can be contributed by anyone in the scientific community, with topics ranging from education, natural and social sciences, humanities, business, technology and other fields. Two issues will be published each year, the press release added.*
