Negros Occ. to celebrate
liberation day tomorrow

Negros Occidental will celebrate the 67th anniversary of the Negros Island Liberation tomorrow on the theme “Negrense WWII Veterans...Men of Valor, Men of Honor”, a press release from the Capitol said yesterday.

Marilyn Marañon and Col. Oscar Lactao, commanding officer of the Philippine Army’s 303rd Brigade will lead the wreath-laying rites at the monument of the WWII Veteran Heroes at the Provincial Capitol Park, at 7:30 a.m. followed by a 21 gun salute, and the playing of taps by the Negros Occidental Brass Band.

Veteran commanders Pio Rodrigo - Bacolod City Post, Eduardo Tambis - 1st District, Herculano Santillan - 2nd District, Antonio Espartero-3rd District, Eugenio Boteros - 4th District, Leopoldo Cosas-5th District and Albino Bendo - 6th District, will lead the floral offering, the press release also said.

Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez Jr. and Sangguniang Panlalawigan members, Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Veterans Federation of the Philippines Region 6 deputy regional vice president Hannibal Lipardo, VFP-RO6 vice president Antonio Collado, and Negros Occidental Provincial Police OIC Milko Lirazan are expected to attend.

Free medical consultations for the veterans and their dependents, and distribution of gift packs will be held at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center that will be jointly coordinated by the provincial government, the Social Welfare and Development Office, Public Affairs Division and the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation, the press release said.

A tableau on the 1945 WWII Negros Liberation will be presented by the Maskara Theatre Ensemble of the University of St. La Salle, also at NOMPAC.

A creative interaction workshop on the history of WWII will be held for 100 public high school students with the Department of Education-Division of Negros Occidental, Negros Cultural Foundation Inc. and the USLS Masskara Theatre Ensemble at the Capitol Social Hall, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow, the press release added.*
