DOST holds skills training

About 30 members of the Bukidnon Tribe Association attended a technology training conducted by the DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute at the Agrarian Reform Municipal Office in Brgy. Kabulacan, Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental, recently, to learn how to transform driftwood into creative and functional art pieces, a government press release said.

Director Gilbert Arbon of the Department of Science and Technology said the group was taught to design, clean and coat the unfinished handicrafts, trained on technical repairs, and oriented on the use of new power tools, the press release said.

The members now know how to manually operate the power tools, and they become instant eco-entrepreneurs by selling the decorative art works, flower vases, and lamp shades made of driftwood, he added in the press release.

Tribe chieftain Dionisio Valor said they are grateful for the technology and skills training provided by the DOST, in cooperation with the local government of Santa Catalina, the press release added.*
