Ice vendor stabbed dead

An ice vendor was stabbed dead at about 12 a.m. yesterday near the Burgos North Public Market in Bacolod City.

Station 4 chief, Senior Insp. Dianne Grace Aquitania, identified the fatality as Ernesto Mendrez Jr., 45, widower, of Burgos-Cometa streets, Brgy. 17, Bacolod.

Mendrez sustained stab wounds on his chest and left hand, and was rushed to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival, Aquitania also said.

The suspect, identified as Roldan Cañete, “alias Bebot”, of Purok Mahigugmaon, Brgy. 26, Bacolod, evaded arrest, she said.

Investigation conducted by Police Officer 3 Rey Escañan showed that earlier, Cañete and Mendrez had a verbal spat.

Aquitania said a manhunt operation has been launched against Cañete, who will be facing either homicide or murder charges.*APN

Carpenter nabbed for carnapping;
teenager for illegal gun possession

A carpenter wanted for carnapping, and a teenager allegedly behind several hold-up incidents, were arrested yesterday and Saturday in Barangays Villamonte and Pahanocoy, Bacolod City.

Raul Gonzaga, 48, of Purok Paho, Brgy. Pahanocoy, Bacolod was apprehended at his residence at about 10:30 a.m. yesterday by the Intelligence Branch of the Bacolod police, by virtue of an arrest warrant for carnapping, issued by Judge George Patriarca, City Police Director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz said.

De la Paz said Gonzaga’s companion, Bong Bong Silva, of Charito Heights Subdivision, Bacolod was apprehended at about 12 noon Thursday at his house.

Gonzaga vehemently denied that he carnapped a motorcycle and also claimed that he does not know Silva.

Station 4 chief, Senior Insp. Dianne Grace Aquitania also reported the arrest of Joeven Pulgo, “alias Dodong Peña”, 20, of Purok Akishola, Brgy. Villamonte at about 8:15 p.m. Saturday, in Purok Sabes in the barangay, allegedly for possessing an improvised firearm with a bullet of a .38 caliber revolver.

Aquitania said Pulgo is also a suspected hold-upper operating in the areas covered by Police Station 4. Pulgo, who is now detained at Police Station 4, denied the accusations.

Meanwhile, three minors were arrested in Brgy. Handumanan, Bacolod City, at about 4 p.m. yesterday after they allegedly stole a DVD player from a resident.

Station 10 chief, Senior Insp. Terence Paul Santa Ana, said that Sunny Herbolario, 39, caught the minors aged 10, 11 and 14, whose names he withheld, coming out of his house with his DVD player.

At the police station, two more DVD players were recovered from the suspects, Santa Ana said.

He added that the 14-year-old suspect had already been apprehended before for a similar offense, but was able to get out from the Social Development Center.*APN
