DA to launch P98.9M
Bago rice project

BY LISA GAPAC

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala will launch the P98.9 million project of the Department of Agriculture for rice farmers practicing third cropping at Brgy. Bagroy, Bago City, Negros Occidental, today.

Jose Ma. Torres, of the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation, said the DA-PCIC-National Irrigators Association 3rd Cropping Project is a nationwide project of the department that gives premium subsidy allocation to farmers who will plant in the third cropping.

Planting season for this is from August to September and farmers will be entitled to free crop insurance this season, he said, adding that this is one of the programs of DA to attain rice sufficiency in the country by next year.

Torres also said that the farmers are entitled to receive their claims at P10,000 per hectare when crops are damaged by natural phenomenon, infestation, and other disasters.

In Negros Occidental, they have already enrolled 2,193 farmers covering 1,934 hectares. In the Philippines DA aims to cover 91,994 hectares for rice production through the subsidized crop insurance, he added.

Meanwhile, Alcala will also launch the Cash for work Program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development-DA-NIA-LGU-IA Convergence.

He will also turn over all projects of DA and the provincial government to the irrigators’ association and PCIC indemnity check to Negros First Universal Crop Insurance Program beneficiaries. * LTG
