Only 8% of gunholders
in city renewed licenses

Only eight percent of gunholders in Bacolod City with expired licenses have renewed their permits since January, city police director Senior Supt. Ricardo de la Paz, revealed yesterday.

Records from the Bacolod City Police Firearms Explosives Security and Guards Section show that  there are 5,418 expired licenses in the city but only 438 gun owners have renewed their permits.

Of these, 228 are high powered and the rest are low-powered, de la Paz said. He said they have already sent notices to delinquent firearm owners.

De la Paz added that guns with expired licenses will be considered loose, and those found carrying or using them will face criminal liability.

The Police Regional Office-6 had earlier announced that there are 22,462 firearms in the possession of Negrenses, but 10,823 of them have expired licenses.

In Bacolod City alone, there are 11,052 individuals with gun licenses, of which 635 have been granted permits by the Philippine National Police to carry guns outside their residences last year,  police records also show.*APN

2 hurt in mishap

Two drivers were injured, when their motorcycles collided with each other at Araneta Street, Bacolod City, near the Visayan DAILY STAR office, at about 4:50 p.m. yesterday.

Renante Portalesa, 41, of Brgy. Taculing, Bacolod, and Renante Vasquez, a security guard, who refused to give his address, were both thrown off their motorcycles and hit the pavement.

Initial reports said  Portalesa was on his Honda Bravo motorcycle making a u-turn, while the Honda XRM motorcycle, of Vasquez, was heading south  when the accident happened.

Portalesa claimed that Vasquez was driving too fast, while the guard alleged that Portalesa made the u-turn without signaling his intent.*RQB
