Manuel Lamata, president of the United Sugar Producers Federation of the Philippines, Saturday said sugar farmers should rally behind the re-election bid of Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr.
Lamata said Marañon was born into the sugar industry and understands its needs.
“A weak governor will be bad for the sugar industry… why experiment with a new one when we have seen the governor’s performance?” Lamata asked.
Marañon is being challenged for the governorship by his Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez Jr.
The governor’s son, Rep. Alfredo Marañon III (Neg. Occ., 2nd District) said “I would like to think that there is still a solution to what is happening, we still have two weeks to go.”
The filing of Certificates of Candidacy is set from October 1 to 5.
However, he did not know if a second meeting among the congressmen of the province would still be called to try to break the stalemate for the governorship in 2013.
The third term congressman said he plans to run for mayor of Sagay City in 2013.
His cousin, Sagay Mayor Rafael Leo Cueva, will run for congressman of the second district in his place, he said.*CPG back
