The proposal to convert the Talisay public market into a mall yesterday met opposition from some of its vendors and owners of small establishments.
Instead, some of them suggested yesterday that the mall be constructed in another area of Talisay.
They expressed fears of possible displacement, citing the expected increase in rental rates, among others during a dialog at the Talisay City Hall, initiated by the PPP Center of the Philippines, that is providing technical assistance to the local city in the development and promotion of tourism.
PPP project director Girlie Santos said the conversion of the market into a mall, as proposed by the city government, needs about P400 million in investment from a private investor.
Based on the plans they presented, the ground floor will be allocated for the market area, while the upper floors will house food chains and other establishments.
She said the proposed mall will still house the existing vendors and store owners, estimated at about 500.
Under the proposal, Santos said the city government will only provide the lot and the investor has the right to operate it for 20 years, with profit- sharing as agreed upon by both parties.
The development of Talisay includes the restoration of its old City Hall into its original state, that will house a museum.* GPB
