Students protest closure of
NORSU Maritime College

BY MARICAR ARANAS

Students of the College of Maritime Education of Negros Oriental State University in Dumaguete City held a protest at the university gate Monday, after learning that the college will be closed next semester.

They said they were disgruntled by the news and claimed that the school administration betrayed them. There are about 1,400 first year to fourth year Maritime students.

Student government governor Audillo Fundador said they were not given enough reasons for the closure.

Environmentalists in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental yesterday said they will conduct a sustained campaign against the use of plastic bags in reaction to concerns that the city government will ease its implementation of the ordinance.

Trelly Marigza, a consultant for 350.Org, an international environmental organization with several national coordinators based in Dumaguete, met with other advocates last night to discuss the use of alternative shopping bags.

The city government will hold a forum today on Ordinance 231 or the Anti-Plastic Bag Ordinance, with representatives from the business sector.
