‘Jewel just a good friend’
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Just good friends. That was how Bacolod Rep. Anthony Golez Saturday described his relationship with Jewel May Lobaton, the estranged wife of Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel.

His wife, Soraya Jaafar Golez, recently filed an annulment case against him where Lobaton's name was reportedly mentioned.

Lobaton, former Binibining Pilipinas Universe and Miss MassKara, heads the group Ako Para sa Batang Pinoy.

“We work together in advocacies regarding children on a professional level; on a personal level, she is a very good friend,” said Golez, former deputy spokesman of then President Gloria Arroyo.

“We're special friends, we know our limitations because we still have legal barriers and we will respect that, we are not ignorant of that,” he said.

He added that “whatever happens after the process of annulment, it is going to be a providential situation if something happens more than what we have right now.”

Golez said he could not answer the allegations in the annulment case because “the law prohibits me from making any public disclosures even to defend my integrity.”

“I really want to answer but my lawyers said let it be handled in the courts. I know that my conscience is clean and I shall properly address the accusations against me at the appropriate time and place,” he added.

Meanwhile, he will let his lawyers handle the matter privately, Golez said.

“It's just unfortunate that our fight as a couple that happened almost three Christmases ago” is being used, he said, by his political opponents to hit him below the belt.

Golez also categorically denied rumors circulating in Bacolod that a video of him having sex with two women and using drugs exists.

He said that, as a member of the House Committee on Communications and Technology, he helped craft the new anti cyber crime law that would punish whoever is responsible for such gimmick.

This is all part of a move to politically malign me, he charged.

“I am praying that the Lord be responsible for them because I will not stoop down to their level. I will continue to be a statesmanlike congressman,” he said.

He said the recent padlocking of his house in Capitolville Subdivision in Bacolod on orders of the court is normal in annulment proceedings.

Anyone who has undergone annulment proceedings would know this, he said.

What is important is that as a congressman, he continues to serve the people, Golez said.

“For the people, what is important is you are not a thief, you don't fool people, and you are not remiss in your work,” he said.

He said he does not know who leaked the information on the details of his annulment, which is sub judice and against the law.

“If I find out who leaked it, they will be answerable to the court,” he added.

Meanwhile, Golez said he has been invited to present the best actress award at the upcoming FAMAS (Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences) Awards night.*CPG
