Anti-coal fight continues

The Cadiznons Kontra Coal yesterday issued an open letter against the establishment of a coal fired power plant in Brgy. Banquerohan and a coal terminal in Brgy. Tinampaan in Cadiz City.

The letter, a copy of which was sent to the DAILY STAR, said the city government, or the project developer has already acquired the Environmental Compliance Certificate for the coal terminal and had built concrete walls in the area even before public forums were held.

The group claimed that they knew that the city government, railroaded the approval and construction of the CFPP.

It also claimed that they made it appear that public consultations were held before the city council unanimously approved the project proposal, which the group claims is a lie, the CKC said.

The CKC also claimed that Cadiznons are against the project and that reports about the alleged social acceptance by residents are untrue.

The group said there are other ways and means for the local government to generate income. Destroying the environment and putting its residents in danger is not one of them, it said and poverty will never be an excuse, the CKC also said.*LTG
