Amendments to ordinance
vs. plastic bags ruled out

BY ROMY AMARADO

Dumaguete City Vice Mayor Allan Gel Cordova yesterday ruled out any immediate amendment to the anti-plastic bags ordinance amid claims by big businessmen that the measure is vague on the use of biodegradable materials.

He told the DAILY STAR that the Sangguniang Panlungsod will give the executive department the opportunity to fully implement the law and its implementing rules and regulations.

It has been noted that some business establishments complied with the ordinance in the few days after it was implemented on August 28, but later on reverted to using plastic bags, and insisted that those were biodegradables.

Salvaging operations started Saturday for M/V Ever Transport III, the cargo ship grounded off the coast of Dumaguete City since December 2011 after tropical storm “Sendong”, Senior Chief Petty Officer Nelson Simbahon, commander of the Coast Guard Station in Dumaguete, said yesterday.

He said the M/V Hamako II of the Steel Ray Salvaging Corporation has started retrieving salvageable items from the ship.

The company had won the bidding to salvage the cargo ship but operations had been stalled because of incomplete requirements.

NORECO 2 contacted 4,428 concrete poles at P52 million from China-based supplier Sumai International Inc., to replace rotten poles in its franchise areas in Dumaguete and nearby towns and cities, its acting general manager, Dionefred Macahig, said.

The poles were manufactured by Yonder Industry Company in Zhejiang, China. The first shipment consisted of more than 3,500 pieces while 870 more will comprise the second shipment, he added.
