3 guards, 2 store employees
nabbed with stolen groceries

Five employees of a department store, three of them security guards, and a tricycle driver, were apprehended by Station 1 policemen at Ballesteros Street, Bacolod City, at about 3 p.m. Sunday for allegedly stealing merchandise from the store.

Station 1 commander, Chief Insp. Adonis Rosales, identified those apprehended as security guards Billy Ryan Montenegro, 24, of Lopez Jaena, Brgy. Villamonte; Aries Artifice, 31, of Sam Village, Brgy. Granada; and Alfonso Topiz , 45, of Purok Pinetree, Brgy. Bata, all of Bacolod City, and detailed at the Gaisano Grand mall.

Also arrested were Jojit Lopez, 39, of Purok Pinetree, Brgy. Bata, Reno Casas, 32, a stay-in store employee; and Michael Papeleras, 24, of Zone 6, Brgy. Handumanan, also of Bacolod, the driver of the tricycle where the goods were loaded, Rosales said added.

Fifteen boxes of grocery items and five sacks of rice, all worth P30,000, were recovered from the suspects. The tricycle with plate number T-060410 was impounded, the police said.

Investigation showed that the suspects had been stealing from the store for eight Saturdays already, before an informant told the police of their illegal activity, that led to their arrest.

They are detained at Police Station 1 pending the filing of qualified theft and theft charges against them.*RQB

Hearing vs.
2 soldiers set Oct. 25

Top military officials will attend the hearing set on October 25 in Himamaylan City of the murder case against two soldiers tagged in the killing of a member of Bayan Muna-Negros, Benjie Bayles, two years ago.

Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares said that they are expecting Lt. Col. Ricardo Bayhon, 61st Infantry Battalion commander, and Col Rolando Jungco, Armed Forces of the Philippines adjutant general, to take the witness stand.

Two motorcycle-riding men shot dead Bayles, 44, in Himamaylan City on June 14. Two suspects on a motorcycle apprehended at a police checkpoint in nearby Kabankalan City later that day, were found to be members of the Army.

Bayhon had initially denied that the two who were arrested, were members of the Army, and false names of the suspects were provided, Colmenares said.

The gunmen were identified as Roger Bahon, 26, of Brgy. Tiling, Cauayan, and Ronnie Caurino, 24, of Brgy. Cayhagan, Sipalay City, Colmenares said.

On Oct. 9, Col. Edilberto Suratos, Army adjutant general, however, issued a certification that those who were apprehended were Pfc Rafael Cordova and Pfc Reygine Luas of the 61st Infantry Battalion of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division.

Colmenares also slammed the allotment of P1.6 billion of the Department of National Defense for the purchase of handheld radios as part of their modernization plan.

He said regardless of the specifications, those handheld radios are still too expensive.

The DND is proposing a P75 billion budget for 2013 that will cover 39 projects intended to boost the capabilities of the AFP.*APN

‘Drug peddler’ arrested

A suspected drug peddler was apprehended in a buy-bust operation at about 2:20 p.m. yesterday in Brgy. Villamonte, Bacolod City.

Arrested was Amos Custodio, 49, of Purok Amor, Brgy. Villamonte, Bacolod City Police Special Operations Task Group chief, Supt. Santiago Rapiz, said.

Rapiz said they tried to arrest Custodio after he handed a small sachet of suspected shabu to a poseur-buyer in exchange for P300, but he was able to escape and hide in the house of his neighbor.

Rapiz said that they chased Custodio and arrested him in the toilet, where he had apparently flushed down the other sachets of suspected shabu.

In 2003, Custodio had been apprehended by Station 4 policemen and charged for illegal sale and possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, but the cases were dismissed, police records show.

He is now detained at Police Station 4, and charges are being readied against him.*APN
