SJI, La Salle cagers
off to Iloilo regionals

Young basketball champions from St. John’s Institute and University of St. La Salle-IS earned a ticket to the regional finals of the Milo Small Basketeers of the Philippines/Passerrelle tournament in Iloilo City this November after topping the September 16 provincial finals at the West Negros University Gym.

The Milo regional championship will be on November 17-18 in Iloilo City where the two teams from Bacolod City will face the champion from Cebu, Iloilo and Roxas City.

The SJI Baby Falcons beat USLS-IS Baby Stingers, 60-52, to successfully defend its SBP title, while USLS avenged the loss with a 64-63 squeaker in the Passerrelle department to foil the Johnians bid for a double championship.

In the SBP final game, SJI held a slim 17-15 opening quarter lead behind the exploits of Andrei Philip Lechoncito, Ralph Chua and King Calinawan.

Despite the young Falcons’ attempt to neutralize Baby Stinger Andre Dadivas, the young gunner managed to score 10 points for the La Salle team.

As SJI tightened its defense in the second quarter, USLS-IS succumbed to the pressure defense and was limited to five points while all five fielded by SJI head coach Ireneo Morales score with Jared Tajonera leading the pack with eight points for comfortable 37-20 cushion at halftime.

Ace Baldevarona and Kian Yves Tecson delivered six points each to engineer a USLS-IS rally in the third quarter, but James Garrucho and Steven Pura combined for nine points for the Baby Falcons for a 48-37 lead.

With Dadivas anchoring their offense, USLS-IS remained within striking distance and managed to cut the deficit to a single digit but SJI was able to protect the lead to capture its sixth SBP provincial title.

Most Valuable Player Tajonera paced SJI with 12 points, Calinawan and Lechoncito added 7 points each, Kis Suarez made 6 points for SJI, while

Dadivas finished with 16 points, Polo Miguel Lopingco picked up 7 points for USLS-IS.*NAB
