Ceres beats Petron in
Huaming cagefest

Ceres Pasalubong 2006/07 held on until the final buzzer to get away with a 70-68 win against Petron 2001/02/12, while Waterfull/Celcor 93/94/95 beat the Legends (89 & earlier)/2009 with a 104-79 blow out in the latest match-ups of the 5th SJI Alumni Basketball Friendship Cup at the Msgr. John Liu Activities Center.

With Keith Banzon hitting two triples and Alvin Dionela scoring five points, Ceres took a three-point lead, 15-12, in the first quarter, only to lose the momentum in the second canto as Petron’s trio of Joshua Co, Ralph Ong, and Marcelino Tan combined for 23 points for a 38-34 halftime lead.

Ceres matched Petron’s intensity in the third quarter to cut the lead to a single point, 48-49 going into the payoff period.

Hounded by fouls, Petron finally yielded the lead in the fourth quarter as Ceres registered its sixth win in seven games.

It was a battle of the frontline in the fourth quarter with Martin Jalandoni tallying nine points and Coo providing support with five points for Ceres, while Ralph Ong delivered nine points for Petron including the last basket as time expired.

Coo led Ceres’ scorers with 18 points, Jalandoni finished with 13, Raymund Lacson had 12, Dionela and Bren Tajonera added 7 points each.

Joshua Co scored 16 points for Peteron, backstopped by Ong with 15 points and Marcelino Tan with 10 points.

In the other game, after five straight losses, Waterfull/Recolor improved their quarterfinal chances after taming the Legends.

The Legends/2009 took the first quarter, 23-21, as Okay

Demonteverde scored eight points and Aljon Diolaso added six markers, while Wilford Sy and Monroe Chua paced Celcor with six points each.

The Legends/2009 were still in the lead at 34-26 in the second quarter, but the Waterfull offense clicked in all fronts as their hitmen scored from the three-point arc, offensive putbacks and fastbreak attacks.

Vincent Javelosa’s savvy quarterbacking also help pushed Celcor in the lead at the break at 46-40.

In the second half, the offense of the Legends /2009 continued to sputter while Celcor, with their confidence growing in every play, continued to dominate and pull away in the game.

Julius Teruel paced Celcor with 19 points, Christian Castro added 14, Mark Cueva scored 13, Javelosa picked up 12 points, Monroe Chua

shot 10 , Michael Ang had 9, Sy with 8 points, Tubby Villanueva had 8, and Alex Fernandez chipped in 6 points.

Wilson Gamboa Jr. paced the Legends/2009 with 18 points, Demonteverde added 17, Richard Uy shot 14 points, and Diolaso contributed 13 points.*NAB
