Mirasol, Yulo battle again in 5th district
COJUANGCOS DECIDING
ON BETS FOR 4TH

BY CARLA GOMEZ

A repeat of the recent uncle and nephew battle for the fifth congressional seat of Negros Occidental looms in 2003.

Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez Jr., Nationalist People’s Coalition-Liberal Party gubernatorial bet, yesterday confirmed that his team is fielding Board Member Emilio Yulo III for congressman of the fifth district.

But Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District), LP Negros Occidental chairman, yesterday reiterated that he is supporting the re-election bid of Rep. Alejandro Mirasol for the district.

Mirasol defeated Yulo, his nephew, with a lead of 13,103 votes in a special election held in June.

Alvarez also bared a partial list of his team’s candidates provincewide.

His challenger, Gov. Alfredo Marañon, on the other hand, said he will reveal his complete slate at a later date.

Alvarez said that in the first district, running under his team are incumbent Rep. Julio Ledesma IV, San Carlos City Mayor Gerardo Valmayor Jr., Escalante City Mayor Melecio Yap Jr., Calatrava Mayor Araceli Somosa , and Board Member Renato Gustilo.

They are also fielding former Board Member and Escalante Mayor Rolando Ponsica as board member, Maling de la Cruz for mayor of Toboso, and possibly Joe Max Ortiz for Don Salvador Benedicto, he added.

In the second district Alvarez said they are fielding former mayor Edilberto Vocal for mayor of Manapla, and a congressional bet and candidates for mayor of Cadiz and Sagay whose names will be disclosed at a later date.

Former Rep. Manuel Puey, Eddie Boy Varela and Leo Gustilo are among those working on their line-up for the second district, he added.

Rep. Benitez will be the one who will reveal their line-up for the third district, Alvarez said.

But he confirmed that the NP will be fielding former mayor Carlo Gamban against incumbent Silay Mayor Jose Montelibano of the Liberal Party.

A new candidate will also be fielded for mayor of Victorias with Severo Palanca on his third and last term, while Jhona Ko will run in place of her husband, Manuel Frederick Ko, for board member of the third district along with incumbent Patrick Lacson, Alvarez said.

Alvarez said Ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco and former Rep. Charlie Cojuangco, were coming out with their line-up for the fifth district. He said a meeting was to be held between the Cojuangcos and Rep. Jeffery Ferrer (Neg. Occ., 4th District).

Asked if Ike Barredo would be fielded as congressional candidate for the fourth district, Alvarez said the decision will be made by the Cojuangcos.

Pulupandan Mayor Magdaleno Peña had said earlier that he is not seeking re-election and is fielding his son, Miguel, in his place.

Alvarez also confirmed that they are fielding former mayor Jilson Tubillara for mayor of San Enrique against incumbent Mario Magno, who is a supporter of Marañon.

It was not known yet if La Carlota Mayor Juliet Marie Ferrer had accepted the invitation of Marañon to run as his vice governor.

There was also talk that Maria Gitano may run as mayor of Pontevedra. The incumbent mayor of the town is Jose Maria Alonso.

Alvarez confirmed that, in the fifth district, the NPC mayoralty bets include former mayor Caroll Guanco for Hinigaran, former mayor Enrico Elumba for La Castellana, former board member Enrique Montilla for Isabela and Ella Garcia Yulo for Moises Padilla.

They are also fielding Renato Malabor for board member of the fifth district, and have yet to choose their second bet from a field of three, he added.

In the sixth district, all the incumbent officials who are seeking reelection belong to his team, Alvarez also said.

Alvarez said that should he be elected governor, the giving of free dormitory space on the third floor of the Cyber Center being built by the provincial government at the Paglaum Sports Complex in Bacolod City, will be studied.

Alvarez said he would convert the third floor of the building into a dormitory that could accommodate about 1,000 students from the towns and cities in Negros Occidental.

We will try to give the dormitory space free to the students but this will depend on the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, he added.*CPG
