The West Negros University Mustangs will stake its crown when it clashes against the University of St. La Salle Stingers this Friday, 5 p.m., in the semifinals playoff of the 32nd NOPSSCEA men’s basketball at the WNU Gym.
Following its 76-79 loss in the hands of the Stingers last Sunday, the Mustangs fate to capture its 14th straight title in the tournament now hangs in balance despite the team’s No. 1 finish in the eliminations.
“It will be a tall order for the team. All we can do is to hope for one more against La Salle,” Mustangs team manager Anthony Carlo Agustin said.
Earlier, USLS head coach Eugene Opu-an said that the Stingers remain hopeful despite finishing without a win in the eliminations. The cross-over semifinals format of the tournament, pitted No. 1 WNU against No. 4 La Salle with the Mustangs having the twice-to-beat advantage.
No. 2 team University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos secured the first seat in the finals by beating Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod Eagles, 86-73, in the other semifinal game last Sunday.
The best-of-three finals will be played at the WNU Gym starting September 30 with game two set on October 3. If necessary, game three will be played on October 5.*NAB
