Abanco rules Negros Chess
Rapid Championship 2012

Police Officer Ernie Abanco dominated the field of 80 entries with six wins and a draw to capture the championship in the second edition of the AIA Antonio Ivan Aguirre FCBI Negros Chess Rapid Championship 2012 held Sunday at the Centroplex Mall in Bacolod City.

Exposed to high-level of competition with his recent stint in Thailand during the 12th Bangkok Chess Club Open Tournament, Abanco made his mark in the Rapid Championship by beating National Master Alfred Acaling III with a rook.

His triumph against Acaling set the tone for his overall domination of the tournament that earned him P3,000 in cash and the Prestige Glass Trophy in the tournament organized by the Negros Integrated Chess Association/Pawnstorm.

Mustangs vs. Stingers
playoff set this Friday

The West Negros University Mustangs will stake its crown when it clashes against the University of St. La Salle Stingers this Friday, 5 p.m., in the semifinals playoff of the 32nd NOPSSCEA men’s basketball at the WNU Gym.

Following its 76-79 loss in the hands of the Stingers last Sunday, the Mustangs fate to capture its 14th straight title in the tournament now hangs in balance despite the team’s No. 1 finish in the eliminations.

“It will be a tall order for the team. All we can do is to hope for one more against La Salle,” Mustangs team manager Anthony Carlo Agustin said.
