Guv creating panel
for talks with rebels
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Gov. Joseph Maraņon yesterday announced that he is creating a five-member panel to represent the province of Negros Occidental in exploratory talks with local leaders of the National Democratic Front.

Frank Fernandez, priest-turned-head of the NDF-Communist Party of the Philippines in Negros, earlier officially announced his willingness to dialog with Maraņon to explore avenues of "cooperation in the interest of the masses."

Fernandez, in a recorded message received by the DAILY STAR Tuesday, said the dialog would not constitute localized peace talks, "it will just be a simple exchange of ideas."moremoremore

'CPP-NPA in
Negros reinforced'
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army has reinforced its forces in Negros with cadres from Bohol and Cebu, Col. Gregorio Fajardo, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, said yesterday.

Fajardo added that this is in compliance with the order of CPP chairman Jose Maria Sison to increase the guerilla fronts in Negros from six to 12.

Citing documents recovered from rebels in encounters with government forces, Fajardo said the Central Visayas Regional Party Committee, which had already been dismantled in Cebu, dispatched some of its forces to Negros, Panay and Leyte for the creation of more guerilla fronts. moremoremore

'Titling of lots at reclamation
in name of city must be done'
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said the titling of the lots where the ports are located at the Reclamation Area in the name of Bacolod City should be done expeditiously, with or without politics.

This was his reaction when asked if a possible team-up with Vice Mayor Renecito Novero in the 2007 election would affect his stand on the matter.

The Mayor had decided in October 2005 that a takeover should be pursued if a qualified renegotiation with BREDCO failed. moremoremore
