‘No whitewash in probe
of cop for slay of barker'

Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office director, Senior Supt. Rosendo Franco, yesterday assured the public that there will be no cover-up in the investigation of the murder of a “barker” where a Bacolod police officer has been implicated.

“Even if he's our fellow officer, we are conducting an investigation. No whitewash,” Franco said of PO1 Edgar Magbanua in a television interview.

Magbanua, a member of Police Station 1, has been linked in the killing of Randy Herevias on November 17. The officer has denied involvement in the incident, and said he is ready to cooperate with an investigation as his conscience is clear.

Herevias, who was reportedly last seen with Magbanua at the Bacolod public plaza, was later found dead in a sugarcane field in Brgy. Pandanon Murcia , Negros Occidental.

Magbaua had said that he had indeed met Herevias that day when he advised him against trailing a woman in the area.

Herevias has a number of theft records at Police Station 1 and had served time at the Bacolod Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

The Murcia police, on the other hand, said that the only affidavits they have now are those of Herevias' wife and sister, who reportedly saw him with Magbanua.*PP

Jail officer electrocuted

A member of the Bacolod City Bureau of Jail Management and Penology died of electrocution when he touched the wire of their television's antenna at about 1 a.m. yesterday, Bacolod BJMP chief, Supt. Samson Abaygar, said.

SJO1 Edwin Estales, 43, was declared dead on arrival at the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center in Brgy. Taculing, in Bacolod , Abaygar said.

Estales' wife, Senior Inspector Ruth Estales, who is the warden of the city's BJMP women's facility, told Abaygar that they were sleeping at home at Brgy. Handumanan when sparks went off from an electrical cable near their residence.

The jail guard, fearing that the electric current from the cable may cause a fire, tried to unplug their television's antenna, but was instead electrocuted by the strong current from the line that had apparently come in contact with the cable, Abaygar said.

Typhoons “Mina” and “Lando” brought on strong winds in Negros yesterday and these may have caused the accident, Abaygar added.

He said they will help hasten the release of Estales' benefits for his family.

Estales has served the BJMP for almost 15 years, Abaygar said.*PP
