Negros Occidental Gov. Isidro Zayco yesterday said corn seeds worth P18 million found to be genetically modified have been ordered held at a warehouse at the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. port in Bacolod City.
Provincial Ordinance No. 07, Series of 2007 bans the entry of genetically modified plants and animals into Negros Occidental, the governor said.
The ordinance states that the ban on GMO products is aimed at "instituting stringent measures towards the protection of biodiversity and attainment of the status of Negros as an Organic Food Island in Asia ".

PNP warns
applicants vs. fixers

The Police Regional Office 6 yesterday reiterated its warning against “fixers” to applicants in the PNP recruitment program.
Chief Supt. Isagani Cuevas, regional police director of Western Visayas, said he has received reports of “fixers” extorting money from police applicants.
The PRO 6 Personnel and Human Resource Development Division is now evaluating 623 applications vying for the 350 slots in 2009 PNP regular and attrition recruitment programs in the Western Visayas.

IN SAGAY
Farm worker robbed, killed

A 55-year-old farm worker was robbed and brutally killed Saturday by still an unidentified man in Sagay City, Negros Occidental.
Senior Insp. Gabriel Gutierrez, Sagay police chief, yesterday said the body of Merriam Sombrado, 55, that bore multiple stab wounds, was found in a sugarcane field at Brgy. Makiling in Sagay City.
Not contented with stabbing, Gutierrez said, the suspect also slashed the victim’s neck.
