Army apolitical: Porto
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Maj. Gen Vicente Porto, commanding general of the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, reiterated a standing order for the men in the field to remain apolitical and not to indulge in political activities.

Porto’s statement came in the wake of reports that a Philippine senator had visited one of the army headquarters in northern Negros Oriental. Porto said he received the report while in Dumaguete City during the private visit of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

He said that politicians, including mayors and governors, as long as they have not yet declared themselves as candidates in the 2010 elections, may visit the camps as elected public officials, but if the purpose is for political campaigning, “We have regulations for that.”

TEODORO SAYS
More soldiers eyed in
fight vs. insurgents
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro yesterday said that about 6,000 more soldiers will soon be mobilized by the Armed Forces of the Philippines in the fight against New People’s Army rebels, Moro Islamic Liberation Front renegades and Abu Sayyaf bandits.

Teodoro said the AFP needs more troops to hold areas already cleared of New People’s Army rebels and Abu Sayyaf bandits, and to contain the MILF renegades.

He also said Congress has already approved the creation of three more Infantry Battalions, composed of about 1,500 men, and an additional 1,500 to fill up the manpower of existing infantry units, this year.
