| The IYAS Creative Writing Workshop at the University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City, announced its roster of Fellows for 2009, a USLS press release said.
The Fellows for Fiction are Jesus Miguel Agreda, Gil Montinola (Hiligaynon), Russel Stanley Geronimo, Ramon Antonio Pandan (English), Irish Angelica Ibon (Filipino), and Errol Merquita (Cebuano).
Those for Poetry in English are Patricia Magno, Vanessa Mae Almeria, Jan Paulo Bastareche and Deborah Rosalind Nieto, the press release said.
Poetry in Filipino fellows are Philip Kimpo, Joselito Delos Reyes and Vijae Alquisola, and for Poetry in Cebuano are Neil Genica and Cindy Velasquez.
The panelists for this year are Drs. Marjorie Evasco, Elsie Coscolluela, Genevieve Asenjo, Leoncio Deriada, Anthony Tan, and Prof. John Iremil Teodoro.
The IYAS Creative Writing Workshop is sponsored by USLS and the Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center of De La Salle University and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the press release added.*

Conflict reporting forum,
photo exhibit calendared
A photo exhibit and forum on reporting war and conflict called “Images of an Ever-Present Past” will be conducted by the Peace and Conflict Journalism Network on April 24-26, at Planta Centro Bacolod Hotel and Residences, Bacolod City, a PECOJON press release said.
It will display and discuss photographed images of the recent war that broke out in Mindanao between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels and government forces, arising from the debacle over the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain.
The launched will be at 6 p.m. April 24, at the Grand Ballroom B, and a forum series will start next day and run until April 26, at the Grand Ballroom A. Sessions will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the press release said.
Speakers will be Ryan Rosauro, a Mindanao-based journalist and national coordinator of PECOJON-Philippines, Charlie Saceda, a photojournalist based in Zamboanga City, Froilan Gallardo, a veteran covering conflict-ridden Mindanao, Matthias Witzel, a psychologist specializing in dealing with stress and trauma, and Nonoy Espina, a veteran Negros journalist who is also national vice chairman of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, the press release added.*

Beach bash slated
A beach bash called, “Pinta Figura Waves Back”, will be held May 2, at Phase 1 of the Canonoy Beach Resort in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental, a press release from organizers said.
Among the highlights are body paintings, beach volleyball, summer fashion show, and “The Ramp” models in their beach wear.
The event will start with a motorcade from Canonoy to Hinigaran town at 7:30 a.m., followed by a presentation of The Fifth band in the afternoon, and DJs Kid, Paul and JB to play favorite Latin and party music throughout the night, the press release said.
The event is being organized by Maan and Toffee Parcon, Jan Perez and Sharon Tijam, and will be for the benefit of Rotaract Club of Bacolod North, the press release said.

‘Banwahanon’
ordinance proposed
A committee hearing on the proposed ordinance institutionalizing the “Ang Banwahanon Award in Bacolod City” will be conducted Tuesday at the Sangguniang Panlungsod session hall of the new government center at 2:30 p.m.
The hearing will be conducted by the Committee on Tourism and Local, International Cooperation chaired by Bacolod Councilor Homer Bais.
The proposed ordinance said that the Ang Banwahanon Award was first conferred in 1974 during the incumbency of then Bacolod Mayor Carlos Benares as a special feature of the city’s charter celebration.
It said the institutionalization of the Ang Banwahanon Award through a local legislation will ensure its continuity and permanence, define the parameters of the selection process to avoid personal feelings, closeness or bias from interfering in the choice considering the prestige of the award give to the person truly deserving it.
The proposed ordinance establishes the criteria for the selection of the awardees and the duties and functions of the Ang Banwahanon Award Committee.
It also provides that the members of the Ang Banwahanon Award committee will be appointed or designated through an executive order issued by the City Mayor.
The proposed ordinance said the city will appropriate an annual budget of at least P300,000 as initial fund to be taken from the General Fund of the annual budget and will be augmented or supplemented as the need arises.*CGS

Paglumotan receives
Knights of Kali award
Bacolod City Councilor Alex Paglumotan was awarded by the Negros Kali International Association Inc. as the Grand Magisterium Sovereign of the Highest Order Knights of Kali, Saturday at the New Government Center, a press release from his office said.
The award said Paglumotan was chosen for being the protector of the oppressed and servant of the poor, and for distinguished, diligent contribution and support in the propagation of the truly Filipino Cultural Art or Kali.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia was also awarded as distinguished Kali.
Paglumotan said the award was given due to his support to the Filipino martial arts which accredited by the Games and Amusement Board in 2006, the press release said.
The awarding ceremony was held during the joint graduation of the traffic enforcers, Kali training programs on community based defenses, attended by deputy presidential spokesperson Anthony Golez, Bacolod Traffic Association Office head Levy Pangue, and Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr., the press release added.*
