BAGO CITY – Will there be a wedding before the May 10 polls in 2010?
Senator Mar Roxas is not saying, but on Saturday he brought his girlfriend of five years, TV personality Korina Sanchez, to the Araneta reunion to meet 1,320 members of his mother’s clan here, fuelling speculations.
"Korina is so much a part of my life and so much a part of my heart, of course it’s only natural for her to be here also," said Roxas, who is eyeing the presidency in 2010.
Asked if Korina was a plus to his 2010 bid, Roxas said “She is a big factor, she is in my heart…I love somebody and somebody loves me, it strengthens my inspiration to serve the people.”
He said Korina is friends with many of his relatives but her being at the reunion will enable her to meet many others, especially his aunts and uncles. Also at the reunion was his mother, Judy Araneta Roxas, who has roots in Bago and Bacolod cities.
Asked if a wedding date was set and if it would happen before the 2010 polls Roxas was evasive and would only say “Our medical mission will be held this afternoon.”
Bobby Capco of the senator’s staff Saturday morning and evening told the DAILY STAR the senator was set to make an announcement on his relationship with Sanchez at the Araneta reunion, but no such move was made. It was not known why Capco appeared to be fueling speculation on the matter.
The Araneta reunions are held every five years, and although Sanchez is deeply saddened by the death of her friend, Trinidad Etong, wife of fellow ABS-CBN broadcaster Ted Failon, she came, Roxas said.
He said he was also saddened by the death of Etong. He said he sympathizes with Failon and his family, “My heart goes out to them, my thoughts and prayers are with Ted and his family.”
Roxas said he believes the police treatment of Failon and his family following the death of Etong was to get back at the broadcaster who has been a critic of police anomalies.
Asked if the Liberal Party would merge with other political parties for the 2010 elections, Roxas said “We will know when the time comes, the LP members are reformists pushing for new reformed politics.”
They can not merge with “tradpol (traditional politician)” parties or with those who have no platform of government, he said.*CPG
