The rains continued for a week and residents said they heard a rumbling sound from beneath the earth.

By Wednesday residents of Sitio Mana-on, Barangay Quintin Remo, Moises Padilla found that the ground where their homes stood had sunk, Mayor Francisco Nazareno said yesterday.

Six houses were destroyed and 28 families have evacuated after a one kilometer radius area sunk and cracked, he said.

A wife bit and mutilated the ear of her husband when he allegedly boxed her in the heat of their verbal altercation at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday in Bacolod City, a police report said yesterday.

Reports said the wife, 27, whose name is being withheld by the DAILY STAR, summoned her husband in front of a variety store at Lacson Street after she heard rumors that he was flirting with their neighbor.

When he allegedly boxed her during their brawl, she bit his ear and mutilated it in retaliation.

Gov. Isidro Zayco and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting yesterday said they hope the death of President Corazon Aquino will spur more responsible voting in next year’s elections.

Zayco said Aquino was loved by the people because she restored democracy to the country and worked for the interests of the people.

He hopes her death will open the eyes of voters, to vote for leaders who will work for the good of the people, the governor said.
