The Dumaguete City government has collected more than P2 million from delinquent taxpayers after resorting to legal action.
Cristina Merced, officer-in-charge of the city treasurer’s office, said that about 50 delinquent taxpayers have to pay their obligations, or their properties will be auctioned.
Merced estimated that the city government has collected more than P2.5 million from delinquent real estate owners, who failed to pay their real estate taxes, since her office started the campaign in 2007. Individual unpaid real property taxes from 1988 to 2007, range from P20,000 to P500,000.
She added that in 2007, her office started to publish the names of 50 delinquent taxpayers, preparatory for public auction. She said that of the number, 45 had either pay their obligation in full or entered into a compromise agreement to pay their obligations in installments.
On July 30, Merced said her office was about to conduct a public auction but the remaining five taxpayers opted to pay their obligations.
She said her office will soon publish the names of 50 more delinquent taxpayers as a requirement for public auction. Merced explained that the city government will limit the number of names to be published because publication is expensive.*RA
