Perdices scores delay
in assigning treasurer
BY ROMY AMARADO

Mayor Agustin Perdices expressed disappointment over the long delay in the replacement of the city treasurer, who, he said, is still being paid her salary by the Dumaguete government, although already assigned in another city.

Perdices said he has been requesting the Department of Finance for 10 years now, to appoint another city treasurer in Dumaguete to replace Ofelia Oliva, who still receives her salary and benefits from Dumaguete.

Several years ago, on request of city officials, Oliva was recalled from Dumaguete following an accusation that the weighing scale in the public market purchased by city was overpriced.

More than P2M in
delinquent taxes collected

BY ROMY AMARADO

The Dumaguete City government has collected more than P2 million from delinquent taxpayers after resorting to legal action.

Cristina Merced, officer-in-charge of the city treasurer’s office, said that about 50 delinquent taxpayers have to pay their obligations, or their properties will be auctioned.

Merced estimated that the city government has collected more than P2.5 million from delinquent real estate owners, who failed to pay their real estate taxes, since her office started the campaign in 2007. Individual unpaid real property taxes from 1988 to 2007, range from P20,000 to P500,000.

‘New call centers
boosting economy’

BY RENE GENOVE

Fil-Chinese Chamber of Commerce Inc. president Alex Sy said he expects a boost in the local economy with the opening of new businesses, especially call centers, in the province.

Sy said new businesses such as call centers are a big boost to local businesses because these are employment-generating companies. They will hire workers, and this will increase the buying power of local consumers, he said in an interview.

ePLDT Ventus, the new call center to open soon in Dumaguete City, had earlier announced that they are eyeing to hire 500 workers initially with plans to increase its workforce to up to 10,000 when it expands its customer base to include foreign companies.
