AACI Farms held off JSY Transport, 91-85, while Huminova Tigers captured the No. 1 spot in the team standings as it nipped Chemisolutions, 94 -91, in the 2nd Fil-Sino All Asian Countertrade Inter-Color Tournament, Monday night at Tay Tung High School Po Hang Gym.
The 46-year-old Roger Montalbo turned back the hands of time as he scored nine points in the final four minutes while teammate Arvin Gustilo scored the last five points for AACI Farms to improve their quarterfinal chances.
Montalbo was given a clear view of the hoop as JSY elected to double team Linn Doble and Gustilo, who combied for 15 points in fourth quarter.
Behind the thumbs-up performance from Gustilo, Doble, Bobby Peñascosa, and John Montemayor, AACI Farms led 44-39 at the break even as Mark Yanson and Matthew Yap scored 8 points each and Kenderson Hao and Dr. Chico Coruña contributing 7 apiece for JSY Transport
In the third quarater, Angel Rodriguez scored 12 to give the Transport guys the lead at 65-61.
Gustilo topscored for Farms with 19 points while Montalbo finished with 17, Charlton Ong added 16, Doble 14, Peñascosa 8, and Montemayor with 7 points.
Hao paced the losers with 16 points while Coruña chipped in 15, Rodriguez 12, Matthew Yap 11 and Yanson, 10.
In the other game, it was raining triples in the first quarter for the Tigers as Joshua Chua hit five treys while Bobby Yap added three to give the Tigers a 28-18 lead.
Chemisolutions came fighting back in the second canto as they tied the game at 46-all behind the inside presence of Christopher Javelosa who scored 14 points, backed up by Celhelm Uy and Romar Desusa with six points each and Marvin Ortiz and Robbie Jalando-on who combined for 10 points.
With momentum on Chemisolutions side, Uy pumped in seven points and Teruel added five for a 70-63 lead.
Chemisolutions had early fourth quarter success behind the savvy quarterbacking of Vincent Javelosa.
To catch up, the concentrated their defense on the Javelosa brothers and were rewarded as Chemisolutions offense became inconsistent leading to their downfall.
As the Tigers turn to the outside shooting of Romar Desusa and the penetration of Robbie Jalando-on, the game was tied at 81-all when an RB Chua follow up play resulted to a three-point additional marks with 3:16 left.
AC Javelosa free throw was answered by Jalandoo-on with his own two gift shots for an 86-82 lead 2:08 mark. From then on, the Tigers never relinquished the lead as Jalando-on scored 6 of the next 8 points for the Tigers in response to the eight points from Javelosa, Vincent Tan and Teruel.
Desusa spearheaded the balanced offense for the Tigers with 18 points while Chemisolutions drew 20 points from Christopher Javelosa.*with a report from Stephen Tan
