| Seven Japanese exchange students have joined the University of St. La Salle Summer English Program of the Center for External Relations, a USLS press release said.
The students were accompanied by Professor Robert Ricketts Chair, Department of Human Relations of Wako University.
They are Mari Akiba a senior majoring in Arts, Izumi Kuritani a sophomore majoring in Sociology, Midori Matsuda a Junior majoring in Human Studies, Shoko Ozawa a junior majoring Human Studies , Mai Saikachi a senior majoring Psychology, Akemi Sakata a senior majoring Sociology, and Naumi Yamada a freshmen majoring Sociology.
The CER office has prepared cultural activities, interaction with La Salle students, home stay and community development for the Japanese students, the press release said.
Started in 2003, the English program was initiated by former Center for International and External Linkages director, Ma. Therese Jochico, who is now the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of the University, it added.*

Kumon offers free trial
A Child's Place Kumon Center will offer for free its Math and Reading Programs for two weeks, starting Sept. 17 to 30, to allow more children and their parents to experience the benefits of the widely-recognized Kumon Method of Learning.
The Free Trial Campaign allows interested students to go through the same learning routine as regular Kumon students. Participants under the campaign will attend four class days and receive daily worksheets at no cost, a press release from A Child's Place said.
“With the free trial, Kumon aims to provide parents a clearer picture of what we can do to help maximize their children's potential,” Kumon Philippines president Norihiro Nakamura said.
Parents interested in the campaign will be given an orientation to help them understand thoroughly the Kumon Method, the press release said.
Children will then be given a diagnostic test to allow instructors to gauge their specific starting point under the Kumon program so that they can begin their experience comfortably and confidently, the press release also said.
Children may be enrolled in the trial period after taking the diagnostic test. Kumon instructors will recommend the appropriate learning program based on the child's readiness level, it added.

PMA entrance exam set
The Philippine Military Academy will conduct an entrance examination for PMA Cadetship at the West Negros University in Bacolod City , 7 a.m. Sunday.
Applicants who have already secured their examination permits are advised to go to WNU at 7 a.m. on examination day and bring with them two valid IDs, photocopy of National Statistics Office birth certificate and Form 137 or college transcript of records, and pencils with eraser, a Capitol press release said.
Those who have no prior applications may apply as walk-in applicants on the examination day at WNU, but must bring the above-mentioned requirements, it added.
Applicant must be a natural-born Filipino citizen; of good moral character; single and never been married; height must be 5 feet 4 inches if male and 5 feet 2 inches if female; must not a day older than 21 years and not a day younger than 17 years on April 2010; at least a high school graduate with GPA of 85 percent or higher; and must be physically fit for cadetship.

Watch tower turned over4
Dr. Uwe Scholz, German Technical Cooperation Programme adviser for Adaptation to Climate Change and Biodiversity Conservation, recently turned over a watch tower and a patrol boat to the Danjugan Island Learning Center .
Scholz presented the items to the Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation Inc. president, Gerardo Ledesma, at the Danjugan Island Marine Reserve and Sanctuaries in Brgy. Bulata, Cauayan, Negros Occidental, Monday.
Board Member Adolfo Mangao represented Gov. Isidro Zayco and Cauayan Councilor Macdoting Zafra, represented Mayor John Rey Tabujara.
Fr. Ramon Olan, parish priest of Cauayan, blessed the center and its two sleeping cabanas, the kitchen and dining cabanas, and the ecosan toilets and bathrooms, a press release from GTZ said.
He also joined the 430-meter hike up to the watch tower and blessed the patrol boat used to service the guests, it added.
The learning center, powered by solar energy, can host teachers' training programs for science conservation, youth marine and wildlife camps, and other programs towards biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, the press release said.
The watch tower and the patrol boat were given to the Danjugan Island Marine Reserve and Sanctuaries to strengthen its capability to enforce laws, rules and regulations in their surrounding waters, it added.
These projects were funded under the climate Change Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, through German Technical Cooperation, and Department of Environment and Natural Resources, under the project “Adaptation to Climate Change and Conservation of Biodiversity in the Philippines”, or ACCBio, the press release added.*
