Three Silaynons bested international and local opponents in two sports events held in Malaysia and in the Philippines , recently, a press release from Silay City said.
Sander Severino, 24, of Purok Ipil-Ipil, Brgy. Mambulac won double gold medals in chess for the Philippine Team in the 5th ASEAN Para Games held August 12 to 20 in Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia .
Severino said his gold medals came from individual and team categories, adding that five more gold medals and a silver from the RP chess team gave the Filipinos the overall title in chess, the press release said.
He attributed his victory to the support extended by the local government of Silay, the press release said, adding that Severino said his family is grateful to Mayor Jose Montelibano and other city officials who enabled his father to accompany him to the ASEAN Para Games.
Severino, a consistent medalist in several chess events in the country and abroad, also won gold medals during the 3rd and 4th ASEAN Para Games held in Thailand and Manila , respectively, the press release said.
Meanwhile, Jeson Agravante and Alvin Villanueva of Barangays Patag and Rizal triumphed in the 33rd National Milo Marathon held on August 23 in Iloilo .
Despite falling twice on the road, Agravante topped the men's 21K elimination run with his time of 12 minutes and 36 seconds while Villanueva finished fourth with a time of 1:15:27, the press release said.
Agravante and Villanueva will compete in the national marathon on Oct. 11 in Manila , the press release added.*
