Dr. Henry Sojor, president of the Negros Oriental State University, has denied reports the school was enforcing an add-on fee of P3,000 for graduating Education students for an on-campus board examinations review.
He said it was not compulsory for graduating students to pay such fee which is way below the current review rates being charged by other schools and review centers outside of Dumaguete City.
He said some review centers in Cebu would charge as high as P15,000 to P20,000 per person.
Sojor also brushed aside reports that Education students at NORSU were told they would not be given the required clearances before graduation, unless they paid the review fee.
He stressed, though, the importance of attending the review prior to taking the licensure exams to become a teacher.
Sojor said some graduates tend to opt for self-review or not take the review at all, a practice that should be discouraged as the teachers’ licensure examinations is very much different from the Civil Service eligibility test.
He maintained that having an alternative review center in the city at a much lower cost would be beneficial to graduates, especially those coming from cash-strapped families.
Sojor also noted that NORSU is the lone university in Negros Oriental that has produced a topnotcher in the licensure exams for teachers.*JFP
