Meniong severes ties
with guv, backs Petit

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Former Rep. Herminio “Meniong” Teves (Neg.Or., 3rd District), tagged as the political kingpin in Negros Oriental, has officially confirmed he has severed political ties with incumbent Gov. Emilio Macias II in what was described as an end to the merry days forged by the two camps back in 2007.

Teves said he is withdrawing his support for Macias and will be campaigning for Vice Gov. Jose “Petit” Baldado in the 2010 elections.

He added that Macias had chosen Mayor German Saraña Jr. as his vice gubernatorial candidate purposely to get votes from Bayawan City, and not for the mayor to win.

Sojor denies forced
add-on review fee
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Dr. Henry Sojor, president of the Negros Oriental State University, has denied reports the school was enforcing an add-on fee of P3,000 for graduating Education students for an on-campus board examinations review.

He said it was not compulsory for graduating students to pay such fee which is way below the current review rates being charged by other schools and review centers outside of Dumaguete City.

He said some review centers in Cebu would charge as high as P15,000 to P20,000 per person.

Comelec execs
join shooting tilt

BY ALEX PAL

Top officials of the Commission on Elections flew in to Dumaguete City Saturday to hone their shooting skills in a Comelec-sponsored competition.

Lawyer Eddie Aba, provincial election supervisor of Negros Oriental, said the competition, held at the Dumaguete Shootists Association pistol range in barangay Looc, Sibulan town, was participated in by national executives, regional directors and provincial election supervisors.

Retired B/Gen. Edgardo Gurrea, chief of staff of Chairman Jose Melo and Executive Director Jose Tolentino Jr. of COMELEC led the list of Comelec officials who joined the shootfest, the first competition of its kind this year, supervised by the Dumaguete Shootists Association.
