| The Sugar Industry Foundation Inc., with the Panay Federation of Sugarcane Farmers Inc., conducted its 80th medical dental mission in President Roxas, Capiz, recently, a SIFI press release said.
The mission was in coordination with three association members of Panayfed in Capiz District, namely, PISPA, CISPAI and LLPAI.
The mission team was headed by SIFI program coordinator, Neolita Alminaza and assisted by SIFI staff.
Doctors and dentists who volunteered were Karen Marie Cunada, Renato Ong Jr., Jean Pastrana, Christine Train, Analyn Jumeras and Ramelita Burgos.
A total of 603 sugar worker beneficiaries and small planters in the nearby areas including their families were served, 564 of them availed of medical consultations and medicines while 39 patients got free dental extractions and medicines, the press release said.
Panayfed was represented by Dulce Blas, Panayfed representative to the SIFI Board; Capiz-Iloilo Sugarcane Planters Assn., Inc. headed by its OIC, Diosdado Lim Jr. and staff; PISPA headed by its president, Jose Seville Jr., while Lutod-lutod Planters was represented by Melanda Batan.
The SIFI mission to outlying sugar farms in part of its thrust to regularly provide medical and dental services and health education to sugar workers and their families, the press release added.*

NEDF, FPE sign pact
for watershed project
The Negros Economic Development Foundation and the Foundation for the Philippine Environment signed a memorandum of agreement for the second year implementation of the Ilog-Hilabangan Watershed Forest Reserve community-based project, recently, a press release from NEDF said.
NEDF was represented by executive director Roseo Depra while FPE executive director Ma. Christine Reyes signed the agreement on behalf of the Manila-based non-government organization.
NEDF is the implementer of the two-year project that aims to establish a community-based initiative that will ensure a sustainable management of the eco-system of the 10-hectare Ilog-Hilabangan Watershed Forest Reserve in Kabankalan and Himamaylan cities, Negros Occidental. This includes the rehabilitation of 25 hectares of denuded areas.
Depra, in the press release, said that the project has four strategic directions – capacity and institutional building, area resource management, sustainable livelihood development and advocacy and networking.
After two years, the project aims to enhance the capabilities of the 30-member IHWFR Management Council on environmental laws, along with three local watershed councils in Barangay Tan-awan and Carol-an in Kabankalan, and Barangay Buenavista in Himamaylan.
NEDF also provides capacity-building activities for the 60 members of the Bantay Gubat Brigade in the three barangays, Depra said, adding that appropriate upland farming technologies and livelihood opportunities are also being provided to affected communities to discourage residents from getting involved in illegal activities such as logging and charcoal-making.*

awards in COPRE’09
The Mass Communication Department’s official publication “The LEAD” of the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City won three out of four major awards in the 36th College Press Awards 2009 of the Philippine Information Agency Region VI in Iloilo Grand Hotel, Iloilo City, recently.
It bagged Best Departmental Publication, Best Newsletter and Best Newspaper, a press release from USLS said.
Over 250 college editors from almost 50 publications of colleges and universities in Western Visayas vied for various awards for their respective publications, and also individual awards for on-the-spot writing contests.
The LEAD, supervised by Journalism Professor Allen Del Carmen, received the awards first place Best Sports Page and Best News Page, second place Best Editorial Page and Best Newspaper Layout, and third place Best Feature Page.
On the individual writing contests, first placers were Ms. COPRE First runner-up Lianne Fernandez in Feature Writing – English, and Mark Christopher Dueñas in Copy Editing and Headline Writing – English, the press release said.
Landing on second place were Jemaimah Taladico in News Writing – English, Kathreen Joyce Tubid in Copy Editing and Headline Writing – Filipino, and John Alexander Cuyoca in Sports Writing – Filipino.
The writers who landed as third place winners were Joana Marie Gareza in Feature Writing – English and in Copy Editing and Headline Writing along with Tubid and Jezeel Mananap in Editorial Cartooning.
Mr. COPRE Peter Samson placed fourth in Copy Editing and Headline Writing – English, while Cuyoca also bagged fourth place in News Writing – English.
Among the others who joined the COPRE were Charese Margaret Chua, Erneil John Garfin and Bashtian Adriatico who are Mass Communication students, and Allen Gabriel Iñigo who was the guest sports columnist.
This year’s COPRE theme adapts the concern on climate change wherein student journalists aired out their views and stand on the timely issue, and it assesses the application of journalistic principles and skills learned by the participants from the series of basic journalism seminar- workshops facilitated by PIA, the press release added.*

CPA’s set induction
The Negros Occidental Certified Public Accountants in Public Practice Association Inc. will hold the induction of its 2010 officers, turnover ceremony and Christmas Party 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Ricardo Hall of L’Fisher Hotel, Bacolod City, a NOCPAPPAI press release said.
Guests from the Association of CPAs in Public Practice in Manila will present an overview of the association’s thrust and objectives.
