IN SILAY

The Christmas Village in Silay City, Negros Occidental, opened yesterday evening with a switch-on ceremony led by Mayor Jose Montelibano, Vice Mayor Mark Golez, city councilors and the officers of Hugyaw Silay Inc.

Special features include lighted trees, life-size Belen characters, a giant Christmas tree, a food court, gift tiangge, Christmas programs on weekends and feria grounds for rides and games, a Silay press release said.

This Christmas Season’s theme is “Magpa-ambit sang Gugma, Maghatag sang Kasadya (Sharing love, giving joy)”.

Montelibano, in his opening message, thanked all Silaynons for their collective support for the activity.  Officials of the 16 barangays of the city, the Department of Education, government workers, and business establishments and individual homes in Silay have given a lot to the Christmas Village celebration, he said.

As thousands of white outdoor lights illumine the public plaza, the city’s covered court will also be occupied by shows and presentations every weekend.

Yesterday, it started with the city government employees’ “Pasundayag sa Paskua” with eight entries, the press release said.

Other activities include the Christmas Carol Choral Competition on Friday, Christmas Presentation of the Silay Folkloric Group and KSE Rondalla on Dec. 19, and live band staging on scheduled nights.

Sixteen parols of various designs and sizes adorn the plaza grounds while huge Christmas Arkos at the many entrances in the plaza complete the whole design, the press release added.*
