The Philippine Federation of Bakers’ Associations yesterday said that its baker-members will not increase prices of bread in the remainder of the year despite hiked prices of sugar and liquefied petroleum gas, the Philippine News Agency said in a press release.
“The prices of sugar and LPG increased. But the bakers who belong to PFBA decided not to impose increase of prices this year. This is our Christmas gift for Filipinos,” said Lusito "Chito" Chavez, PFBA vice president, during Balitaan sa Tinapayan news forum held in Sampaloc, Manila.
Chavez said the years 2007 until 2009 were not good for bakers, especially the small bakers. “The series of price increases of LPG and ingredients need for the making of bread really affect us. This really hurt especially the small bakers,” the press release said.
However, the bakers expressed optimism that 2010 would be good for the baking industry.
“The public accept the prices of bread. It is good that there is no LPG shortage at the moment, if that happens then there might be shortage of loaf bread,” he said.
He said the bakers also thanked Department of Trade and Industry for promoting pandesal, the press release added.*
