Sagay Mayor Alfredo Marañon Jr. Saturday said he was disappointed by the failure of world leaders meeting in Copenhagen to come up with a stronger commitment to curbing greenhouse gas emissions.
The summit ended with no targets for carbon cuts and no agreement on a legally binding treaty.
Marañon, a long time environment advocate, said the failure of the world leaders to come up with a more comprehensive commitment is “very bad, we are running out of time, we are very much delayed already,”
Countries all over the world should do something very drastic very soon to prevent further devastating climate change, he said.
The sad thing is the industrialized countries are the ones who are less committed to saving the environment, Marañon added.
“Meanwhile, we in Negros should just continue to our share to continue the fight versus climate change,” he said.
“We must do our share, its better than doing nothing,” he added.
In a press statement yesterday, Greenpeace strongly condemned what it called the arrogance of the heads of state from the world’s most powerful countries for presenting a “take it or leave” deal to the Copenhagen Climate Summit.
“Whilst en route to the airport they claimed the deal was done, it was not. All they left was chaos and confusion in their wake.” Greenpeace said.
Greenpeace International Executive Director, Kumi Naidoo, warned: “The world is facing tragic crises of leadership. Rather than coming together to secure a future for hundreds of millions of people by agreeing an historic deal to avert climate chaos, leaders of the world’s most powerful countries have betrayed future and current generations. Averting climate chaos has just gotten a whole lot harder.”*CPG
