Negros State College of Agriculture of Kabankalan City is threatening to grab the overall title in the 11-delegation Regional State Colleges and University Meet that ends today in Talisay City .
The regional meet is hosted by Carlos Hilado Memorial State College.
With at least seven championship matches left as of press deadline yesterday, the NSCA athletes registered 54-22-27 gold-silver-bronze medal tally.
WVSU was running second overall in the penultimate day (38-27-23) – based on results compiled by the DAILY STAR as of 3 p.m. – with its women's basketball squad and dance sports team vying for golden honors.
Posing a threat to the WVSU-NSCA titular tussle is host CHMSC, with a 28-12-16 count.
The CHMSC athletes were still in contention for the gold medal in women's softball, football and women's volleyball late yesterday afternoon.
NSCA, which was the tournament's doormat in the 2007-2008, was powered by the NSCA swim team which won 35 golds in the pool.
Twenty-six of the swimming golds were won by the men's squad and another nine by the women's team.
The medal harvest was reinforced by nine golds in baseball, where NSCA is the defending champion, and another eight in men and women's taekwondo.
The NSCA athletics squad grabbed two golds in the long-distance events – 5,000m and 10,000m – for the 54 gold medal haul.
We're happy for this unexpected turnout and the performance of our players, said Dr. Freddie Maningo, NSCA president, who invested in the college sports program as a priority program and “as a way of promoting the college and making education at NSCA more wholistic.”
Dr. Maningo recalled that he sent only the band as a token delegation at the SCUAA meet during his first year of office, adding that from a 10th place finish the following year, the NSCA Sparrows improved their performance last year by placing fourth runner-up in the overall count.
He attributed the overwhelming medal harvest of the swimmers and the taekwondo team to their exposure in the 2009 NOPSSCEA season, where they were invited as guest team.
The strengthening of the sports program at NSCA is a priority concern of Maningo, who vowed to improve NSCA performance in subsequent meets.
NSCA outclassed Guimaras State College, 15-0, in the men's baseball championship yesterday with its men's softball squad bowing to Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State Collehe in the finals of men's softball.
The NSCA baseball and softball squads are coached by Leo Oñasa, Noel Baclasan and Dalmacio Moncera.
The swim team engineered the medal haul with the men's squad hauling 26 golds from the pool and the NSCA mermaids topping nine events.
Adding strength to the NSCA campaign is the performance of its taekwondo team, mentored by Joel Pontino and Albert Dipala, which was declared men and women's champions after capturing five golds in men's division and a 3-2 gold-and-silver tally in the women's side.
The men's swimming squad was lead by Rey Tablatin of NSCA Sipalay Campus, who won five gold medals, Daryl Pumano of Moises Padilla and Al Blanca, native of Patag, Silay, who each took four gold medals.
The swimming team is coached by Maria Na Ceza Belleza, Engr. Marc Alexil Ceasar Badajos and Noel Fordente.
Behind the shadows of NSCA, WVSU and CHMSC in the medal tally as of yesterday afternoon are Capiz State University (16-42-23) and Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (13-2-9).
The other Negros entry – Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology – is at the bottom of the medal race with one gold, two silvers and 19 bronze medals.*AVDC
